Work is all about others. 

From the client or supervisor, who makes a request of us to the 

subordinate who helps us fulfill on those requests, we are constantly in communication with an other.

The success of that communication is influenced greatly by our ability to work with each type 

of person we come in contact with. But, they’re all different. Some of them are an easy fit for 

our thinking and communication style, and others are no fit at all.

Often our focus in improving our communication is on the words we say. In truth, at the 

core of communication is not the words we say, but the words they hear 

...and they don’t hear the words you say. 

Each human involved in each situation has a thick layer of filters and interpretations 

developed from past experiences, culture, fears and concerns, hopes and dreams. Tossing our words into that listening can have all the certainty of golfing in the dark. Step one to any well planned communication is a clear understanding of how our words will be heard by the other.

During meetings and conversations tracking how we are heard and what is actually 

being absorbed by the other is our job. It is where powerful communication lives.
